I can't seem to find the thread, but someone on here made a post concerning either PV or Clintwood being left out of the playoffs in the early 80's. If I'm not mistaken it happened to each in consecutive years at the expense of the other. The difference in now and then tho is this (and I wish they'd go back to it): Prior to 1985, if you weren't a district champion, you weren't in the playoffs. You had the LPD, Cumberland, and Black Diamond...the one with the best record had a bye and home field advantage for the Region D title game. Then the State Title game was alternated between A,B/C,D winner annually (like it was until just a few years ago). There were no divisions in each class or anything like that (And, considering the size of the schools we play upstate, the division no longer work...so I say we just scrap them.) and there were no power points...YOU HAD TO WIN YOUR PLAYOFF SPOT ON THE FIELD IN YOUR DISTRICT. The Region had 3 playoff teams and everyone else pumped up the basketballs. But, getting back to the point, back then, if you had co-champs in the district, the head to head winner went to the playoffs and the loser stayed home. I know it bit PV, Clintwood, and Appy at least once each (anyone remember the "Co-Champs is Better Than No-Champs" sticker with the Dawg on 'em?)...but that's the breaks back then..BUT IF YOU WEREN'T A CHAMP, YOU WEREN'T IN THE PLAYOFFS. I would be delighted to see 'em go back to this exact model.

I have no problem at all with that if the VHSL forces the districts to be more evened out. Take PV/JJK and put them in the CMD put CW in the BDD and the rest of the LPD in the CD. Force Grundy, Richlands, and Graham to play single A all in the BDD and I say lets go to town.

They weren't evened out then...so I don't see a problem with it then or now. The problem I have is the lack of a cut off number for each classification. Set the cut off number for each classification...have A, AA, and AAA and forget it. IMO, the old way was better.Originally Posted by pvfan

Some of the schools didn't have football teams, but that's where they played in other sports. I'm about 100% positive that I've left some schools out...but that's about what Region D looked like at 1 time...and only 1 school from each district played more than 10 football games per year. Like I said earlier, if you weren't a district champion, you went home. To me, that's fairer than power points and the equal thirds rule we have now days.

I wasn't sure where those 2 were...most all of that changed between 1984 and 1989 with the consolidation ofthe Lee county schools. Still, however it was, I like just having district champs in the playoffs and doin away with all the power points.

BDD also has Pocahonas and Whitewood
The BDD had Council only from 92-95 for football. Whitewood's team was from 92 to, I don't know when (don't have the right papers with me right now). You left out Pocy , from 70-95.
It was 73... Clintwood went 10-0, Appy 9-1. In 77 & 78, Clintwood 10-0, Kelly 9-1. Appy beat Cw in 80. Kelly won the LPD in '81, knocking out 8-1-1 Appy. PV won it 82 & 83.
In 88' PV was 6-0, 8-2 and Appy went 5-1, 9-1, but Divisions had started by then.
Whitewood played until they combined Garden to form Twin Valley which was 01 I believe.

In 84 PV started out 1-2 with several injuries affecting those games. Players got healthy and also a return of a long time very motivational assistant coach the Vikes won the last 7 games. 6 of the 7 opponents at the time the games were played were ranked in the top 10 and 2 in the top 2 in the state. Last game of season top 5 ranked Appy was knocked off 27-0 and sent Clintwood to playoffs.
